Tip of the Day!

Dallas Beauty School Tip of the Day:

Highlights

To get the perfect sun-kissed highlights, you basically have two options: traditional foil highlights and the newer, edgier “balayage.”

Balayage refers to the process of sweeping color onto hair using a paddle. Balayage gives the colorist more freedom to place color where she/he chooses, unlike foils which can be much more precise. Color away!

Tint School of Cosmetology Beauty Tip:

Tweezing

1.Cleanse your skin with a washcloth to naturally exfoliate the skin. If you want to go all out, use a facial scrub (see my list of the best facial scrubs). Worried about pain? You can actually apply Anbesol, Orajel or any teething gel for babies onto the areas you plan to tweeze.
2. Brush brows up and out with a clean toothbrush or your fingers.
Situate yourself near a window with light pouring in or under a bright light with a good mirror (magnifying mirrors are best, but be sure and flip it over to see your overall effect in the regular mirror). I like to tweeze my brows on my back deck where the light is perfect.
Make sure you have a good pair of tweezers with a slanted edge (my favorite, hands down, are Tweezerman slanted tweezers (buy Tweezerman online). They last forever, because the company will sharpen them for free.

3. Tweeze hairs in the direction they grow. Try to grab one hair at a time. You can hold skin taut as you pluck.
You can start anywhere, but I usually tweeze the area under my arch first, then I move above the brow and I clean up in between my brows last. It’s a myth that hair above the brow should never be touched. You want both the bottoms and tops to be smooth.
The best brows have a slight arch. To find yours, take a long eyeshadow brush or pencil and hold it parallel to the outside edge of the colored part of your eye (the iris). Where the brush meets the brow is where the highest part of your brow should be. Tweeze the hairs underneath the arch.
4. Tweeze the stray hairs between your brows. The space between your brows should be equal to, or a little wider than, your eyes. To find where your brow should go, take the brush or pencil and hold it parallel to the side of your nose. Where the brush meets your brow is where your brow should begin. Tweeze the strays in between.
Stop every few hairs to step back and look at the job you’re doing. If you overpluck, you’re stuck. Unlike most hairs on your body, your brows won’t always grow back once they’re yanked.
5. Once you’re done plucking, you can apply aloe vera gel, which will calm the redness right away.

Do you long for thick, voluminous hair? Stress, aging, genetics and the chemicals in hair treatments and dyes are all possible causes of thin hair. No matter why your hair is thin, there are strategies you can employ to get thicker, fuller hair. Here are a few tips to getting that voluptuous hair you’ve been waiting for!

* Select chemical-free hair products
* Handle your hair gently
* Stop using heat
* Let your hair be its natural self
* Get regular trims
* Eat a nutritious diet
* Protect your hair from environmental damage
* Relieve your stress
* Try a hair thickening product

How to do a Fish Tail braid

1. Push all hair behind your shoulders. Preferably hair that has already been brushed and has no tangles. Divide hair into two sections down the back.
2. Take a small outer piece of one of the two sections of your hair (it doesn’t matter which section you start with). Cross the small piece over and add it to the inside of the other section. This piece you have crossed will now become a part of the other section. Keep your crossed piece tight or hair may start to come out once you’ve finished braiding.

3. Now you’re going to make the exact same cross but this time you will use the other section of hair. So, once again take a small piece from the outer part of the section and cross it over to the inside of the opposite section. Again, remember to keep the crosses tight.
4. Continue crosses small outer pieces over to the inside of the opposing section. The smaller the pieces you cross, the better the braid will end up. Stop braiding once you feel the sections getting too small. This should be around two or three inches from the bottom of you hair.

Dallas Beauty School Tip of the Day:

Lower Lash Mascara

If you don’t wear lower lash mascara, now is the time to start. It instantly opens up your eyes, creating that coveted doe-eyed effect. Incentives, incentives.

That said, we get it. Sometimes you swipe a few coats on your bottom lashes and then you find it traveling down your face, leaving you with unsightly raccoon eyes come 4 p.m.

If this is your greatest lower lash fear, we’re here to tell you that this can all be avoided thanks to a cool beauty trick.

When you apply mascara to your bottom lashes, only put it on the highest, curved point near the root—don’t take it clear to the ends. This will still give you the eye-opening benefit, but since you didn’t apply any to the tips, it won’t allow the formula to transfer onto your skin.
